What Will Be Nick Fury's Role in Infinity War?

He's back! Samuel Jackson had previously stated that he would not appear in either Avengers 3 or 4, but news this week suggests that he will indeed make some form of cameo. Fury is the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D and the founding father of the Avengers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He hasn't had a significant role in a Marvel movie since Captain America Winter Soldier (where SHIELD was shut down), but has made some brief appearances in later films.

One thing we are not going to see is Nick Fury playing an extended role. Filming has already wrapped on both movies, which included almost no Jackson. What Sebastian Stan (Bucky) did say was "there was one scene, I think, we had where everybody was there. I can't really talk about that scene, but I knew it took them three months in planning this scene to have everyone there. You look around and you just saw everyone from Samuel L Jackson, to Michael Douglas (Hank Pim), to Michelle Pfeiffer (Wasp). Everybody was there".

This doesn't sound like an end credits scene. It seems like the moment when everyone is gathering before of the battle of Wakanda. Bucky mentions Jackson, Douglas, and Pfeiffer all together, which might suggest that Fury appears on an Ant-Man story arc, but it's worth pointing out that Samuel Jackson does not appear on the upcoming Ant-Man and Wasp cast list. I don't think Stan was referring to a scene that included just those 3 characters, but just referenced those names because they are all iconic actors.

Possible Infinity War Roles:

1) End the Civil War: At the end of Captain America Civil War, they never actually resolved the war. Cap and Tony fought at the end, then went their separate ways. The Avengers team will still be split up when IW begins, so they are going to need some resolution. If Fury is present at the battle of Wakanda, that's also probably going to be first time Captain America and Ironman meet face to face since the end of Civil War. We can probably expect Nick to mediate a resolution to that dispute, given he's the one responsible for bringing both of them into the Avengers initiative.

2) Introducing Captain Marvel: This might be the one character who will appear in Infinity War that we know the least about, and her stand-alone movie is currently in the process of filming. Guess who is listed 4th on that cast list? Yes, Sam Jackson himself. She has not been shown in the Infinity War trailers yet, so we can't speculate what role she'll play in the story. There is a very good chance that J will introduce Captain Marvel to the MCU before the battle of Wakanda. Captain Marvel's movie is being set in the past, so don't expect the two story-lines to intersect, but during that movie Fury should establish himself as Captain M's liaison with Earth. Josh Brolin has said that he filmed with Cap Marv, so she is likely to show up at the battle of Wakanda, if not at Titan.

3) Resurrect SHIELD: The current state of SHIELD in the MCU is not good. I can't say with absolute certainty because I have mostly lost interest in the TV show, but from what I've seen, it's been a rough ride since the events in Civil War. One has to imagine that as soon as that alien ship starts hovering above New York, Nick Fury's phone started ringing. Probably his previous employers begging him to take his old job back. Nick could show up as the temporary or permanently reinstated director of a resurrected SHIELD.
