15 Worst Villains in a Comic Book Movie

What have been the 15 worst acting performances portraying a villain in a comic book movie (Marvel or DC)? This is judged mostly on quality of the acting and the total entertainment value of the villain, but dialogue and bad CGI do also play a factor.

1) Jesse Eisenberg, Lex LuthorBatman V Superman:

Jesse won the Razzie and deservedly so. That speech he delivers at his party is among the 5 worst scenes in the history of comic movies, arguably the very worst.

2) Jamie Foxx, ElectroAmazing Spiderman 2

Steamin' Willie Beamin' was neither steaming or beaming as Electro. I tend to like Jamie Foxx, but this one was painful to watch.

3) Topher Grace, VenomSpider-man 3

It would be fascinating to see video footage of the casting meeting where highly paid executives talked about how Eric Foreman from That 70's Show was the best choice to play this menacing villain.

4) Arnold Schwartzenegger, Mr FreezeBatman and Robin

There's an argument to be made that this performance was so bad that it was funny. If we made a list of the top 10 worst catch phrases for comic movie villains, Arnold probably has four.

5) Colin Farrell, BullseyeDaredevil

Far be it from me to speculate what kind of drugs Colin Farrel might have been taking at the time this movie was filmed, but he does share significant responsibility for this movie being terrible.

6) Toby Kebbell, Doctor DoomFantastic Four

I've been struggling to repress my memories of that Fantastic Four reboot abomination, one of the top 5 worst comic book movies ever made.

7) Kevin Spacey, Lux LuthorSuperman Returns

I almost forgot this movie ever happened, and needed to research bad villain performance before even remembering he'd done this.

8) Ciaran Hinds, SteppenwolfJustice League

We can partially blame this on bad CGI and dialogue in a poorly written and directed movie more so than the acting performance. I don't hold Ciaran Hinds personally responsible, but DC struck out hard on this one.

9) Cara Delevingn, EnchantressSuicide Squad

This character was almost interesting early, but everything from the moment she re-unites with her brother is legit awful.

10) John Travolta, Howard SaintPunisher

I kinda liked Thomas Jane as the Punisher, but they could have done a better job casting the bad guy. He went "Full Travolta", and the movie suffered because of it. Whoever cast him as John Gotti probably didn't see this film.

11) Tommy Lee Jones, Two-faceBatman Forever

I do think that the character of two-face has an incredibly high degree of difficulty from an acting standpoint. Aaron Ekhart was great as Harvey Dent, but even he struggled with 2-Face.

12) Mark Pillow, Nuclear Man, Superman 4 Quest For Peace

This is another terrible comic book movie that brought us another terrible villain. This was the first and last movie of Mark Pillow's acting career. At the time he probably thought this was a big break that would lead to a promising future, but it turned out to be the exact opposite.

13) Peter Sarsgaard, Hector HammondGreen Lantern

Possibly the worst comic book movie ever made. There's an argument to be made that this guy deserves to be top 5, but we don't really take this movie seriously enough.

14) Uma Thurman, Poison IvyBatman and Robin

Her side kick Bane probably deserves an honorable mention, except that it wasn't an acting performance. Uma was near her career apex at the time, but took this a bit too far.

15) Pedro Pascal, Max LordWonder Woman 1984

We are big fans of Oberyn Martell, but this performance was tough to watch. He's almost charming at the beginning of the movie, but as he slowly descends into madness, the over-acting gets progressively worse. By the time we get to the final act and the "whole world makes a wish" sequence, we were laughing at how bad he was.

Honorable Mentions:

Jared Leto, The JokerSuicide Squad

We didn't get to see much Leto in the movie, but the performance has not aged well. He did redeem himself in the Snyder cut of Justice League where he revamped the character, but that doesn't delete what he did in Suicide Squad. He was bumped out of the top 15 by Pedro Pascal yet will remain forever more in the honorable mentions section.
