15 Best Villains in a Comic Book Movie

What have been 15 best villains ever in a comic book movie?  This is judged mostly by the quality of the acting performance but the entertainment value of the whole package is also a factor (including CGI, quality of the movie and dialogue).

1) The Joker, Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight

This didn't require much thought or deliberation. Second place isn't even close.

2) The Joker, Jack Nicholson, Batman

Jack held the title of all-time best comic book movie villain for several years before Ledger hit a grand slam with his portrayal of the same character.

3) Magneto, Ian McKellen, X-Men

Sir Ian played this role in multiple films, but my favourite performance for Gandalf as a villain was in the original X-Men. Rotten Tomatoes ranks X-Men 2 as the best of the original trilogy.

4) Killmonger, Michael B Jordan, Black Panther

One question I had prior to watching Black Panther was; if there was a hyper advanced civilization in the heart Africa for the span of human history, how could they have allowed colonization, exploitation, and the slave trade to occur? Ryan Coogler turns that flaw into the main motivation for the villain, delivered with incredible passion by MBJ.

5) ThanosJosh Brolin, Infinity War

It's difficult to judge Brolin's performance against some of the others on this list given that it all came while wearing a motion capture suit. Part of Thanos's rank here is how well the whole package worked in a fantastic movie.

6) Green Goblin, Willem Dafoe, Spider-man

It was a close race between the top 2 Spiderman villains Dafoe and Molina for this spot. We needed a tie breaker vote. Ultimately Norman Osborne was more sinister and compelling.

7) Doctor Octopus, Alfred Molina, Spider-man 2

Molina makes a sharp turn from a genuinely good person into a maniacal villain who takes old ladies as hostages and throws them from buildings.

8) Loki, Tom Hiddleston, Avengers

By the time we get to Thor Ragnarok, Loki has mostly dropped his villain status. In Thor 1 and Avengers 1, he's a stone cold killer, responsible for the deaths of thousands of souls. There was even a genocide attempt against his own people.

9) Ras al Ghul, Liam Neeson, Batman Begins

I'm not sure there would have been any actor more perfect for this role than Neeson. Ras would probably disagree that he's even a villain, but there's no doubt that his plans score high on the evil scale.

10) The Vulture, Michael Keaton, Spider-man Homecoming

The scene in the car when Vulture figures out that Peter Parker is Spider-man is incredible.

11) Hella, Cate Blanchett, Thor Ragnarok

She won the 2017 Cinema Analytica Award for best villain and best actress. Cate should have received an Oscar nomination for this role.

12) Ebony MawTom Vaughan-LawlorInfinity War

Despite Tony Stark comparing him to a character from Sponge Bob, we loved Ebony Maw. Tom V-Lawlor delivered some chilling voice acting. We have already campaigned to have his character resurrected for future Marvel projects (he'd be a perfect Herald of Galactus).

13) General Zod, Michael Shannon, Man of Steel

Some people might prefer the original version of General Zod, but our vote goes to Michael Shannon, who was fantastic in that role.

14) Cat Woman, Michelle Pfiefer, Batman Returns

Michelle held the title of best woman portraying a villain in a comic book movie for several years until Cate Blanchett came along. Karen Gillan as Nebula was close to making this list. We fully support casting more women as comic book movie villains.

15) Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan, Captain America Winter Soldier

Bucky Barnes does the "hero to villain and back again" transition over the course of the Captain America franchise. His apex as a villain was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
