Does Thanos Need A Love Interest?

In the Infinity Gauntlet comic books, Thanos is in love with Mistress Death, who is supposed to represent a female version of the Grim Reaper. It is out of his love for her that he snaps his fingers and wipes out half the life in the Universe, gifting her all those souls. Marvel studios decided to drop the Thanos love interest story line from the Infinity War movie, giving him a different motivation for the finger snap, being an eco-warrior.

The whole "I'm doing this to save the Universe" motivation they gave Thanos was an interesting twist on the events from the comics. The cast was already large enough, so casting a girlfriend for Thanos was not entirely feasible. There was a time when people were speculating that Cate Blanchette might play the role of Death in Infinity War. She is Hella the Asgardian Goddess of Death after all. Thanos loved Death in the comics. It all fit. Instead they changed his motivation into a twisted version of the Green Party platform.

The only kind of love story we did see was a father-daughter relationship between Thanos and Gamora. His interactions with his adopted daughters was a big part of both Guardians of the Galaxy films, and will likely play a key role in the plot Avengers End Game. In the comic book version, he tortured and mutilated Nebula until she eventually turned on him to steal the gauntlet. If any casinos were offering odds on who takes the Gauntlet from Thanos in the next movie, Nebula has to be high on the favourites list. There would be something fulfilling to see Nebula get revenge for all the abuse she suffered from her father.

The father-daughter dynamic did bring more emotion to Infinity War, but it would also be compelling to see him fall in love. Thanos being “hot” was a thing on social media when the movie came out (we’ll assume they mean Josh Brolin). Blanchette gave an award-winning performance as Hella in Thor Ragnarok, and it would be a fascinating interaction if paired with the mad Titan in a romantic escapade, especially given the power dynamic between them. That’s something I’d very much like to see.

Of course, there will not be a Hella-Thanos romance in End Game because the filming is done and nobody reported Blanchet on set. I’m speaking mostly in hypothetical. They would almost need to make Infinity War into a trilogy to fit in a Hella storyline. We don’t know what they have planned for Thanos after End Game. It’s entirely likely he’ll be in more movies. If they ever make this Harley Quinn-Joker romance action movie and it’s a success, maybe we could get a Thanos-Hella love story?

I’m not sure Disney would do that.
